We just love holidaying here and have recently come back after our 4th trip in a row. We love the food - all fresh and plenty of variety. We've stayed in 4 different en-suite rooms and they've suited our needs perfectly. Thank goodness there's no televisions. We weren't the only non-Germans there this year, but in any case our family has always found the staff and fellow guests very welcoming whether in German or in English. Fun local things to do include - swimming in the local lakes, canoeing on the Alz, cable car trips up the Kampenwand, excellent indoor and outdoor pool in Wasserburg, hanging out in the beer garden with a good book or with friends.
We've generally had a good-sized room with balcony. We don't go to the Steinbauers for coffee machines, TV, telephones, minibars etc. The kids have enjoyed the bunk-beds and the 'baby-listening' facility has been really liberating.
Home cooking, fresh additive-free ingredients, plenty of fruit and vegetables, always a hot dinner and a huge selection of fresh salads. The beer is excellent. The icecreams are enjoyed by one and all.
The staff and management have been so welcoming to us and taken time to socialise and to help us out whenever we've needed it. The premises are clean and the few necessary formalities are always efficient. One of the most attractive things about the Steinbauer establishment is that you are genuinely made to feel very welcome. The kids love the independence that they enjoy here and they too enjoy a warm welcome.
It's a very pretty village in beautiful rolling countryside within easy striking distance of the Alps and around an hour's drive from either Salzburg and Munich airport (though we'd highly recommend flying to Salzburg if you have the option). We've always been able to park our hire care on the premises or on the road outside. Even after four years we're still finding new things to do in the area and have a couple of firm favourites we like to do every year.

Both our kids have learned to swim in the lovely little indoor pool. The outdoor pool has been enjoyed in hotter summers by our kids. Our children have really enjoyed playing on the swings and the "castle" ramparts and in the sandpit. The hotel has organised pony trekking, tractor rides, and family walks. We've also enjoyed alpine walks and cinema trips for parents. It's a great cycling area and the hotel has bikes available for hire at really cheap rates. Even though the kids' German is pretty minimal, they've managed to join in with crafts activities, putting on mini shows and dances and had fun playing with new friends they've made there. Our sympathies go to the guinea-pigs who possibly feel a bit over-cuddled by our daughter.
